GMA Set Committee To Look Into Cause Of Sinking Ship At Takoradi – Elmina Coast

The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) has set up a committee to probe the incidents leading to the sinking of a fishing vessel between the coast of Elmina and Takoradi.

A statement issued by the Maritime Authority on the sinking of the Vessel said the Committee is also tasked to conduct a Marine Casualty Investigation by analysing the evidence available and determining the causal factors to draw conclusions relevant to the causal factors and make safety recommendations.

“We are continuing to engage all Fishing Vessel Operators and Personnel to abide by the rules guiding their trade to preserve life and property.”

This comes after the vessel sank at sea on Friday, May 6, 2022, when an attempt to haul a net with a bumper catch resulted in the vessel capsizing.

The incident led to the death of the captain of the fishing vessel with other sailors still missing.

Of the 26 crew members on board the vessel, 14 have been rescued, but 10 others, together with one observer from the Fisheries Commission, are yet to be found.

Background To Story

A vessel with a total crew of 25 comprising 19 Ghanaians and 6 Chinese capsized on Saturday, May 7, 2022, on the coast of Takoradi – Elmina.

Reports from the survivors indicates that, the vessel had caught a lot of fish and in the process of hauling the net aboard, the vessel tilted which was also aided by strong currents leading it to sink.

Seven Ghanaians and one Chinese are said to be unaccounted for following the sinking of a vessel, MV Comforter 2.

Investigations are still ongoing to account for the lost sailors.

According to the Public Relations Officer for 2Garrison, Enoch Opata, the vessel was heading 46 nautical miles South of Saltpond where the unfortunate incident happened.
