Today, April 27 marks exactly fifty (50) years since the death of Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah. It is on this note that, Ghanaians have been entreated to honour and not forget pioneers of the nation.
In an interview with GTV’s Breakfast Show monitored by Spice FM, Erzoah Bogoro Yankson, a family member of the late President Kwame bemoaned how the family has been neglected by the state.
He revealed this while speaking to Kafui Dey from Half Assini in the Western Region, Home Town of Nkrumah.
Kwame Nkrumah who was born on 21st September 1909, was a Ghanaian Politician, Political Theorist, and Revolutionary. He was the first Prime Minister and President of Ghana, having led the Gold Coast to independence from Britain in 1957.
Dr Kwame Nkrumah died in Bucharest, Romania, in 1972 while being treated for cancer at the age of 62.
Mr Bogoro, a family member of Dr Nkrumah revealed that “they came to destroy the grave of the father of Osagyefo after his death, adding that they demolished everything without any compensation”.
He said anytime he remembers the incident, he shed tears.
Mr Bogoro believes the family needs to be compensated as his body is being placed in a museum as a tourist attraction, adding that the government provide a new structure for the family.
“We have to be compensated because Nkrumah himself doesn’t have his own building. The building we currently live in was built by a Dutch and we suffer to keep it in good shape. The family house doesn’t define the personality of Kwame Nkrumah,” he said.
However, the spokesperson of Dr Nkrumah’s family sent a message to the government.
“My message to the government is that they should not forget the Pioneers of the Nation.”
