The Paramount Chief of Sefwi Wiawso, Katakyie Kwasi Bumagama II, has urged residents of the Western North Region to prioritize peace and unity as the 2024 general elections approach.
Speaking at the 2024 Eluo Festival, Katakyie Kwasi Bumagama II stressed the importance of a peaceful electoral process, highlighting that it is crucial for preserving the region’s stability and promoting democratic values.
The Eluo Festival, a beloved annual celebration of the region’s agricultural roots and cultural heritage, provided the perfect setting for the chief’s important message. The event brought together chiefs, youth leaders, community members, and political representatives from across the region, fostering a collective sense of purpose as the electoral season approaches.
In his address, Katakyie Kwasi Bumagama II expressed his concerns over the potential tensions that elections often bring, urging political figures and their supporters to prioritize peaceful conduct over rivalry.
“Elections are a cornerstone of democracy, and it is our shared responsibility to maintain peace during this critical time,” he stated. “This is our opportunity to show that Western North can set a national example by upholding democracy through peace, mutual respect, and understanding.”
His Royal Majesty called on political leaders to focus their campaigns on the issues that matter, ensuring that they respect the region’s diversity and avoid inflammatory rhetoric or actions that could incite violence.
He emphasized the importance of restraint from all political parties, reminding them that peaceful elections depend on civil discourse and respectful engagement among all groups.
Katakyie Kwasi Bumagama II also urged unity and tolerance within the community, reminding residents that political differences should not tear them apart.
He addressed the youth directly, acknowledging their vital role in the electoral process and urging them to direct their energy toward positive, constructive activities rather than being drawn into violence.
“Our youth are the future of this nation,” he said. “Let us not allow political rivalry to undermine their potential. I urge you all to reject any calls for violence and instead commit to preserving peace within our communities.”
The chief further called on community leaders and influencers to act as mediators, helping to maintain peaceful conduct throughout the election period. He encouraged traditional leaders, religious figures, local authorities, and community groups to collaborate on peace-building initiatives, emphasizing the importance of dialogue and nonviolent conflict resolution.
In concluding his speech, Katakyie Kwasi Bumagama II reiterated his plea for peace, stressing that the election period should be marked by unity, not division. “Political parties come and go, but our communities remain,” he reminded the gathering. “Let us work together to ensure that, regardless of the election’s outcome, our region emerges stronger and more united.”
He also reminded everyone that peace is not just a temporary commitment but a continuous responsibility that must be upheld in everyday life, well beyond the election season.
