Family of taxi driver who died in custody drags Police to court.
The family of the taxi driver who died in a police cell after he was arrested for knocking down a police officer around the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital has dragged the Ghana Police Service to court.
The family said it seeks to find answers on what killed Joseph Entsie as they suspect foul play.
Entsie was pronounced dead at the Sekondi Police cells on December 5, 2021, the same day he was arrested and detained.
Kwame Appiah, a brother of the deceased stated that the Police have on several attempts to change the narrative indicating he committed suicide.
An examination was conducted by a pathologist known as Dr. Erskine at the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital on January 10, 2022.
According to the family, the pathologist communicated to them that the real cause of death of their relative was not as a result of hanging as alleged by the police.
The lawyer indicated that the family is demanding the full autopsy report from the pathologist.
Lawyer for the family Ebo Donkor, who is also with the Legal Aid Commission in an interview with the media mentioned that the court has set Wednesday, March 2 for the hearing of the case.
He added that they are praying the court to stop any attempts by anyone to compel the family in burying the late taxi driver until an independent pathologist is contracted to conduct an autopsy on the body.
“We have heard there are attempts from the powers that be and the police for the family to bury the body but we want the court to issue a restraining order to that effect,” he said.
“We also want to receive the full autopsy report from the pathologists to ascertain what caused his death. We also need answers from the police on what killed the late taxi driver.
However, Kwame Appiah added that until the result of the autopsy is released, there would not be any burial for the deceased.
