GIBA President Advocates for Partnership between Journalists and Police
The President of the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association, (GIBA) Cecil Sunkwa Mills has called for partnership between Journalist and the Police Service.
His comment comes against a backdrop on the recent arrests and brutality of some journalists on the part of the Ghana Police Service in the country.
GIBA, mandated to promote high professional standards amongst practitioners and protecting the interest of its members as well as to promote ethical standards among broadcasters is in the Western Region to hold its Regional Executives Elections for the Western, Western North and Central Region.
Cecil Sunkwa Mills in an interview with Spice 91.9 FM stated that both agencies need to be educated on the nitty gritty of work carried out in their respective fields.
“We’ve had engagement with all law enforcement and you can see that the infractions vary from side to side. What we see as GIBA is how to avoid such occurrences so we’ve outlined certain things in enhancing information across ourselves. One of the things we found out is that, Police may not necessarily have a complete insight into our business of broadcast.
“We would use opportunity to share all nitty gritty but at the same time, I guess journalist also do not understand Policing”, he stated.
He hinted of a workshop to be organized to enhance the skills, capability and knowledge of media personnel, who would be schooled on how to become agents of information to the Police.
The workshop likewise would include the Police to share insights on the profession to enable journalists to appreciate the work of the Service.
“We cannot teach it amongst us as journalists and broadcasters, we need the involvement of the Police so that we can understand why they move and act in a certain way,” he indicated.
