Avian Influenza hit some poultry farms in Sekondi-Takoradi.
The Western Regional Director of the Veterinary Service, Mr. Simon Gbene has confirmed that the outbreak of the H5N1 subtype has ravaged poultry birds in the metropolis.
Mr. Gbene noted that the situation was having severe effects on the farmers as lots of long time investments were being lost without any form of assurance from key stakeholders.
He stated that two poultry farms located in Apremedo and Airport Ridge had recorded the Avian Influenza in the Metropolis.
Mr, Gbene explained that due to the zoonitic nature of the outbreak poultry farmers should contact the veterinary officers when they suspect a possible outbreak of the flu on their farms to save birds from being affected.
He further called on the government and city authorities to put measures in place to mitigate the spread of the flu onto other farms within the municipality.
Farmers were also advised to pay acute attention to their poultry birds and put down safety measures to ensure safety of birds at all times.
