EKMA Embarks on a Number of Projects

Mr Kojo Acquah, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the Effia-Kwesimintsim Municipal Assembly (EKMA) in the Western Region has announced that the second year under the Ghana Secondary Cities Support Program (GSCSP) are ongoing and at various stages of completion.

The GSCSP projects include asphaltic surfacing of Assakae – Whindo road (2.0km) and bitumen surfacing of Whindo Health Post road (0.5km), construction of 10 No. Refuse Collection Points and Fabrication and Supply of 10 No. Skip Refuse Containers.

Speaking at the Fourth Ordinary Meeting of the Second Session of the Assembly, Mr Acquah announced that the Assembly has completed the procurement processes and awarded some developmental projects to successful contractors.

Among the projects is the construction of 6-Unit Classroom Block with ancillary facilities and 6-Seater Water Closet Toilet Block with water tank support for Mpatado M/A Basic School, construction of 2-Unit Kindergarten Classroom Block with ancillary facilities for Mpatado M/A Basic School and construction of 2-Unit Kindergarten Classroom Block with ancillary facilities at Effiakuma.

The rests are the construction of 10-Seater Water Closet Toilet and 2-Bay Urinal Block for Whindo Market, construction of 2 No. 6-Seater Water Closet Toilet facilities for East Tanokrom Market and Good Shepherd Anglican School and construction of 3 No. pedestrian footbridge at Effia, Kwesimintsim Zongo and I-Adu respective, which are all completed and in use.

Mr Kojo Acquah further explained that the contractors working on the projects have been on site while most of the projects were at various stages of completion.

He said the Works Department also monitored and supervised all other ongoing projects during the period under review notably, the continuation and completion of the CHPS Compound at Apremdo (about 65% completed), construction of staff accommodation block for the Whindo Health Center Phase I (about 85% completed) and construction of 3-Storey Office Complex for EKMA at Apremdo (contractor not currently on site).

The rests are the construction of Municipal Court and Accommodation at Apollo and Whindo respectively which is currently about 95% completed and Build Operate and Transfer (BOT) project for the construction of Sanitary Facility at Mpatado with roofing works completed.

Touching on environmental health and sanitation, he said that the Assembly in its effort to get rid of waste in the Municipality organised clean-up exercises on several occasions which were successful and well patronised by the Assembly Members and residents.

He highlighted that the Municipal Disability Committee vetted a total of forty (40) letters after which twenty-nine (29) individuals were selected as beneficiaries of a total amount of fifty-three thousand (53,000) to receive their disbursement.

The breakdown includes eight (8) deaf persons, eleven (11) physically challenged, seven (7) persons with intellectual disability, two (2) visually impaired and one (1) albino.

The items for disbursement was deep freezers, school items, Fufu Pounding Machine, Pepper Grinding Machine, welding machine, plumbing tools, bags of maize, gallons of cooking oil, tubers of yam, welder’s tools, bags of onions, bags of charcoal, baking ingredients and printing materials among others.
