Nigerian health officials have reported a diphtheria outbreak in the nation’s capital, Abuja, following the death of a 4-year-old child.
An infection like this is extremely contagious and can result in fatal heart and breathing issues, especially in children.
Numerous outbreaks have been reported across Nigeria since late last year, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), with nearly 800 confirmed cases and at least 80 fatalities.
Despite diphtheria being included in the nation’s regular childhood immunization program, the vast majority of cases, according to the report, were among unvaccinated individuals.
The NCDC has urged the general public to be on guard and make sure that anyone exhibiting symptoms report early to health facilities in order for medical professionals to diagnose and treat them right away.
