TACOTEL Plants Trees to Save the Environment
Management and staff of the Takoradi Container Terminal (TACOTEL), the sole handler of import and export cargo at the Takoradi Port in the Western Region have embarked on a tree planting exercise on its premises as part of the national tree planting exercise to plant five million trees.
The exercise, which forms part of the Company’s support towards the Government’s bid to plant over five (5) million trees in efforts to preserve and protect the country’s forest cover and the environment at large, saw the planting of twenty-six (26) trees made of three species around its walls.
Mr Kobina N. Otoo, Commercial Manager of TACOTEL who spoke on the sidelines of the exercise gave the importance of trees and said trees improve soil health by protecting it from wind and rain, absorbing water, and building stability with their root structures.
He expressed the hope that planting trees in Ghana will help create young, resilient forests that can absorb carbon, clean the water and air, and recover from fire, drought and flooding.
He therefore called for the need to keep the environment clean, support any action towards keeping the environment clean and educate the youth in Ghana about the importance of sustainable forestry for the long-term health of the economy and natural resources.
He announced that the World Environment Day aims at spreading awareness about conserving our ‘Mother Nature’ as well as issues like climate change, water pollution, air pollution, overpopulation, global warming and every other issue impacting our environment.
“Look down and see what’s always been under your feet, this World Environment Day, promise the world to save the earth. Clean earth is happy earth, save the earth, save the environment. There is no place to live other than our precious earth, save the earth with your best efforts”, he stated.
He noted that there would be no life without water, nothing bigger than a green environment and no better place than earth and called on the populace to save the earth with the right practice, plant trees, and use less water and save electricity.
