#Worldmalariaday2021: Death Toll among children reduces from 2799 to 312

A health promotion officer of the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital, Peter N. Kwofie, has revealed that the death toll for malaria cases among children of all ages has reduced from 2799 to 312 from 2012 to 2020 respectively per the 2020 statistics from Ghana Health Service.

According to him though the country has made significant strides in the fight against Malaria, it is important for stakeholders to work very hard towards zero infection rate in as much as we take pride in our achievements.

The World Malaria Day 2021 under the theme “Reaching the Zero Malaria target” this year celebrated the achievements of countries that are approaching and achieving malaria elimination.

“Deaths toll for malaria cases among children have significantly reduced from 2799 to 312 from 2012 to 2020, this sounds good but us health personnel we cannot rest on oars but we all have to support the effort toward reducing the infection rate to zero”

Meanwhile suspected malaria cases still top at the outpatient department in many Hospitals in the country.

“Suspected malaria cases across all ages in Ghana at the Out Patient Department (OPD) are 42% which is almost half of all the total disease recorded at the OPD.  21% out of the 42% are confirmed malaria cases and 18% out of the 21% are admitted malaria cases at the Hospital”.

He cautioned against self-medication and advised that people should resort to the hospital for medication.
