(Video added): Headteacher Appeals For A New School Block

Madam Carolyn Idun Tawiah, Headteacher of the Good Shepherd Anglican JHS at Effiakuma New-Site in the Effia-Kwesimintsim Municipality (EKMA) of the Western Region has made a passionate appeal to the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Municipal authority to provide them with a new school block.

This comes after the school was hit hard by the recent rains where its compound and classrooms were flooded, destroying lots of properties worth sums of money.

“I think we need an entirely new block since this always happens anytime it rains. Moreso, the place is a water log and sometimes water is seen coming from the ground. We plead for the authorities to help us especially, as we approach the rainy season”, she lamented.

Madam Tawiah told Spice News that the entire classrooms were flooded submerging all desks and destroying books, cardboards and other materials belonging to the students and the school.

A heavy downpour in mid-afternoon last Thursday in Sekondi-Takoradi and its adjoining communities resulted in massive flooding on various streets and areas destroying lots of properties and displacing others.

Among the areas that were greatly affected are the entire Central Business District (CBD) in Takoradi, Essikafo-Ambantem No. 1 and 2, Mankessim White House area, Adakope, Kokompe, Effiakuma New-Site, Takoradi Airport road, Ekuase near Sekondi, Anaji and other low levelled areas.

The Headteacher said even though the students were in school they were rescued safely by teachers and some ‘good samaritans’ in the community without any injury.

She explained that it took the intervention of teachers and some parents in the community to help collect all the waters from the classrooms to make the place usable.

However, at the time Spice News visited the school, the classrooms were still soaked in water to the extent that it could not be used by students while attempts were made to recover some of the leftover teaching and learning materials.

When contacted on the Assembly’s plan for the school, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) mentioned that the NADMO Coordinator was detailed there to assess the situation and a report made to that effect to the Chief Executive for action to be taken.
