Construct speed ramps to reduce over-speeding – Headteachers to GHA

Heads of some Basic Schools in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis (STMA) in the Western Region have appealed to the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA), for the urgent construction of speed ramps and pedestrian crossing on the stretches of the highways and other feeder roads especially, where schools are located.

This, according to the Headsteachers who spoke in an interview with Spice News, will help address the worrying frequent vehicular knockdown of other pedestrians and school children crossing the road to and from school.

Though they could not immediately provide figures on the number of pupils knocked down, they expressed grave concern over resultant fatalities including deaths caused by speeding vehicles plying those portions of the road, especially from the Anaji-bypass and the Takoradi-Tarkwa Highway.

Mr Samuel Apenteng, Headteacher of the New Wave International Academy in Assakae recounted that attendance went down whilst drop-out rate increased in some years back since school children feared to cross the road to school unaided.

He further lamented that the schooling period of other victims were also interrupted due to long periods of hospitalization and recuperation at home.

He complained about countless previous fruitless efforts to relevant authorities to address the challenge and called on the city authorities and all the stakeholders in the road safety arena to assist in expediting prompt action to save the worrying situation.
