The citizens of Asankragua cluster of villages in the Wassa Amenfi West District of the Western Region have bemoaned the deplorable nature of their roads and the lack of school building.
Against this background, they have reiterated the call on the Government to rehabilitate the deplorable feeder and town roads in the communities and the provision of school building.
Communities along the Bawdie-Asankragua main road are the most affected with deplorable feeder and town roads in the District.
Nana Ayisi Kwoffie, an opinion leader in one of the communities who spoke in an interview with Spice News said the people expected the Government to award the roads in the communities on contract to facilitate the movement of passengers and luggage to and fro.
He said farmers could not cart their cocoa beans, palm fruits, plantains, oranges and other food crops to the commercial centres to make some income as transport owners refused to ply the route for fear of damaging their vehicles in the mud.
The opinion leader said the communities were not benefiting from the Government’s educational policy as the District Assembly and the Education Directorate remained adamant to their plea for a school building in the communities.
He said school-going children had to trek for a long distance to attend school and that during the rainy season some rivers, which were without a bridge, overflowed its banks making it difficult for the children to cross.
He said the people suffered from fever, malaria and snake bites but the District Community Health officials were not able to reach the area due to its water-logging.
Nana Kwoffie also bemoaned the rate at which chainsaw operators were felling timber in the area, resulting in the wanton destruction of the forest, farms and the road network by the heavy timber trucks.
