Railways Minister escapes defeat
The incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) for the Essikado-Ketan Constituency, Mr Joe Ghartey has escaped defeat staged by his closest contender from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as he retained the seat amidst stiff competition.
Mr Joseph Antwi Boateng, Returning Officer of the Electoral Commission who supervised over the elections at the Constituency announced the results with the incumbent leading by a thin margin.
Mr Ghartey of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) recorded 26,701 while Dr. Grace Ayensu-Danquah had 24,527 which allowed the incumbent to go back to the house of legislature.
The election was greeted with a lot of misunderstanding in Essikado as ballot boxes in a pickup from an unknown source were prevented from entering the Collation Center.
However, it was later rectified and identified as legitimate boxes for the election.
There were pockets of violence as people were pepper-sprayed due to the misunderstanding while three warning shots so far were fired by the security personnel present.
During the electioneering campaign, there was a heated argument between the camp of Mr Ghartey and Dr. Ayensu-Danquah as they battled for supremacy.
Indeed, political analysts say Dr. Ayensu-Danquah gave Mr Ghartey a run for his money, which got him working but predicts a gloomy picture for him should he contest again with the NDC candidate.
