Journalists told not to incite violence ahead of December polls

Chief Superintendent (C/Supt) Ibrahim Sulley, Western Regional Operations Commander has called on journalists to avoid acts that have the potential to incite violence before, during and after the December polls.

He also implored journalists to desist from interfering with the work of the police or security officers and should be done with Polling Officials during the election process.

Speaking at a one-day training on crime reporting and crime scenes management organized by the Western Regional Police Command for journalists in the region ahead of the 2020 general elections, he urged journalists to consider their safety first before the stories.

“It is better for journalists to cover assignments in their familiar terrain so that they can easily be identified as known journalists by the police or security officers and the civilians involved in the operation”, he opined.

For his part, C/Supt Ebenezer Boryor, Western Regional Crime Officer who took participants through the do’s and don’ts of crime scene management urged journalists to collaborate with the security agencies in the fight against crime.

He asked the journalists to avoid crime scenes in the discharge of their duties as tampering of the scene could make investigations difficult for the police and may put the journalist in trouble.

Mr Justice Ennin, Western Regional Director of the National Commission on Civic Education (NCCE) said it was the sole mandate of the Electoral Commission (EC) to declare election results and charged participants to avoid doing so.

He also called on them to exhibit professionalism in the discharge of their duties at the Polling and Collation Centres to ensure free and fair elections.
