A knife attack at a hospital in China’s Yunnan province resulted in fatalities and injuries, local authorities confirmed.

Described as a “violent incident” by state media outlet Xinhua, the attack occurred at Chengnan Hospital in Zhenxiong county.

Authorities are actively gathering information regarding the incident.

The county’s public security bureau disclosed that a male suspect from a local town had been identified, with investigations ongoing.

Videos from the scene showed police apprehending a suspect at a nearby wellness center, as reported by Guizhou Television, though official confirmation linking the individual to the attack is pending.

An eyewitness interviewed by reporters noted the ongoing chaos as authorities worked to assess the situation.

China, where private gun ownership is prohibited for civilians, has grappled with a series of mass stabbings in public spaces in recent years.

Previous incidents include a fatal knife attack outside a kindergarten in Guangdong in 2021, a stabbing at an elementary school in Guangxi in 2020, and another kindergarten attack in Jiangxi in 2022.

Yunnan was the site of a notable knife attack in 2014 at a train station in Kunming, where assailants from Xinjiang killed dozens and wounded scores.

Additionally, violence targeting healthcare facilities is not uncommon in China, where medical professionals often face assaults from patients or their families, frequently due to concerns over treatment quality and costs.
