Ultramodern Takoradi Market on course – City Mayor
Mr Abdul Mumin Issah, Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) of the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) in the Western Region has reiterated that the Redevelopment of the Takoradi Market Circle has been on course unabashedly according to plan.
He said, currently, brisk work is ongoing at the GHAPOHA Junior Staff Quarters area where majority of the market women will occupy while other provisions have been made to relocate other traders to places like the ECG Pay Point at the Market Circle, New Spain area and Osei area at the Kokompe light industrial enclave.
Speaking to Spice News, Mr Issah said, the markets when constructed will improve social infrastructural facilities like toilets, proper drainage networks and health posts, improve waste collection, reduce traffic congestion around the markets, increase in trading activities, and provide adequate visitors parking lots and security.
It would be recalled that President Akufo-Addo in his recent tour of the Western Region cut the sod for the commencement of the project expected to cost the Ghanaian tax payer some €48 Million and to be completed in 30 calendar months.
The Mayor stated that the over 100 year old market as it stands today, is unbearably congested with inadequate storage and sanitary facilities, vehicular congestion, weak wooden structures, inadequate drainage, poor electrical works which exposes traders to health, safety and fire risks.
He hinted that the new market will consist of 2,408 stores, 33 restaurants and food courts, bulk baking areas, visitors parking, Union Offices, separation and changing room for potters and will be given to the Assembly on lending terms since it was funded through a credit facility from the SACE Italian Export Guarantee Agency, an Italian firm.
It is also expected to create 400 – 500 direct jobs and 1,000 – 1,500 direct and indirect jobs, and as well increase the leasable stores, boost social economy and general revenue for the Assembly.
The Mayor deemed the construction of the new ultramodern market awarded to a Brazilian construction firm, Contracta as a welcome investment.
According to him, the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development (MLGRD) and the Ministry of Finance (MOFEP) will establish a special purpose vehicle to ensure the overall operations and maintenance of the market to make sure that there is constant supply of water and electricity.
There will also be provision of insurance cover, garbage collection and waste management, revenue collection and management, engagement and supervision of other services in the market, and regulation of activities of drivers and transport owners of the market.
‘Chief Moon’ as he is affectionately called, commended his predecessor, the late Anthony K.K. Sam for his determination and commitment towards the project in making sure that it becomes a reality and promised his unflinched commitment to make that determination materialised.
