BECE: Candidate Dies After Writing Maths Paper, Five Others Dropped Out Due To Pregnancy
One of the candidates sitting for the 2020 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) has died after a short illness.
The deceased whose name was given as Richard Mensah was a final year student of the Apowa Methodist Junior High School (JHS) in the Ahanta West Municipality of the Western Region.
School Authorities say, he fell unconscious a few minutes before the second paper, Basic Design Technology (BDT).
Report reaching Spice Fm has it that he had earlier complained of some headache when he got to the examination center but managed to sit for the Mathematics paper before the unfortunate event happened.
The Coordinators of the exams managed to convey the pupil to the nearest private health facility, Jemima Crentsil Hospital in Kwesimintsim but died on arrival.
Master Richard’s body has since been deposited at a private morgue awaiting autopsy.
In a related development, five female students who are sitting for the BECE in the Western Region have been found pregnant.
These students have been identified in the Effia-Kwesimintsim Municipality (EKMA) and the Jomoro Municipality. The numbers are as follows, two (2) in EKMA, and three (3) in Jomoro.
Public Relations Officer (PRO) for the Western Regional Directorate of Ghana Education Service (GES), Cate Biney lamented that they had tried several times through their District Officers and Gender Units to persuade these students to take the final Exams but to no avail.
