Western Region Inaugurates SWAG
The Western regional branch of the Sports Writers’ Association of Ghana (SWAG) was launched on Saturday in Takoradi, with a new leadership to steer the affairs of the infant regional body.
The inauguration brought about 50 sports writers and broadcasters from some major towns in the region.
The launch which was held at the conference hall of Naakof Hotel was conducted by the SWAG president, Mr Kwabena Yeboah, and members of the National Executive Council.
The National Executive Council, led by the SWAG president, inaugurated the association by announcing the new officers who will steer the affairs of the association for the next two years.
The Western region which boasts a vibrant sports media from radio, television and print is the third biggest in the media landscape in Ghana with about 40 radio stations, four television stations with correspondents for the national newspapers and portals.
The interim Regional Executives of the Western Region branch have since been inducted into office and shall be chaired by Mr George Kuntu Blankson with Mr Ekow Essilfie of Focus1 media as his vice.

SWAG, the umbrella body for sports journalists in the country, has been in existence for over 50 years and currently has inaugurated branches in Bono, Ashanti, Eastern and the Volta regions.
SWAG is noted for honouring sports excellence annually through the SWAG Awards and the SWAG Cup which is often contested for by the top football clubs in Ghana.
The Western regional inauguration was graced by the Regional Minister Hon. Kobby Mensah, Wilson Arthur of Skyy FC, Hon. Joseph Cudjoe (Deputy Minister for Energy) and other top officials.
