Photos: Fire Guts Agona Nkwanta Market in Western Region

Fire gutted into some parts of the Agona Nkwanta Market around 7pm today destroying thousands of properties.

Eye witnesses who spoke to beachfm online.com said that they could have helped to quench the fire much earlier than what happened if the the security men at post allowed them entry into the market on the spot.

They say there were some confrontations with the security men at post for sometime before an entry into the market was granted due to the fear of theft per the assertions the security men was the cause of the spread.

“I was at the Filling Station where a Taxi driver told me that the market was on fire, when we rushed down to the scene the security man at post didn’t allow as to go in immediately because of fear of theft. We later forced them to open the gate and helped to put out the fire before the Ghana Fire Service arrived at the scene”.

They added that though Ghana fire service came to the scene very late after several calls, entry into market was also a challenge.

“When we called fire service they said their vehicle wasn’t in good shape, it took a motor rider to drive to their office to call them”.

Eye witness called on authorities to reconstruct the market to ensure better pathways to avert similar challenge in the future.

“The market need reconstruction, fire service told us that due to the nature of the market their vehicle could not enter the market because there was no way, all the path ways have been blocked with tables”
