COVID-19: KUMASI SOUTH HOSPITAL SUCCESSFULLY DELIVER PREGNANT COVID-19 PATIENT

A 33-year old pregnant COVID-19 patient has successfully delivered at the Kumasi South Hospital.

Clinical Care Coordinator and Chief-coordinator of the COVID-19 Case Care Management Committee at the Kumasi South Hospital, Dr Angela D. Frimpong, explained further the issue in an interview with Orange 107.9.

“On the 23rd of April, we had an admission of a confirmed COVID-19 positive pregnant woman, into our COVID-19 isolation unit. At that time she was due for labour, so we had to put contingent plans and measures on how to go about it because it was something we have never seen before”, she said.

Dr Frimpong further reiterated that, the delivery was taken care by an obstetrician, gynaecologistsl and a midwife, when she complained of pains in her lower abdomen a night before delivering.

The whole COVID-19 issue as we know, has had a tow on the psychology of individuals, especially patients who have tested positive. Dr Angela revealed that, the pregnant patient was psychologically traumatised and it’s normal because it was expected; and because of this, the Kumasi South Hospital have psychologists on their COVID-19 management committee to talk to patients and psych them up.

“There has been a 10-year old child somewhere in Europe who tested positive, so it’s probable that the virus may be transmitted to the baby through the processing of birth or whiles the baby was in uterus, although research haven’t really shown us that there is vertical transmission from mother to child” she concluded.
