All residents in the Greater Accra Region are mandated to wear facemasks when stepping out of their homes to public places, the Greater Accra Regional Minister has said.
This comes on the heels of President Nana Akufo-Addo’s advice to the general public to wear facemasks all the time when he addressed the nation on Sunday, 19 April 2020.
The Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC) said in a statement signed by Regional Minister Ishmael Ashitey that it reached the decision at an emergency meeting held on Wednesday, 22 April 2020 in order to ensure compliance with the President’s directive.
The statement directed the “mandatory wearing of facemasks in the Greater Accra Region by the general public, education/ sensitisation on facemask wearing, social and physical-distancing by the various MMDAs in their respective jurisdictions.”
Other decisions reached include the “creation of satellite markets by MMDAs to decongest main markets in the Greater Accra Region, a temporary ban on all ‘special market days’ in the region” and the “installation and use of public address systems by MMDAs in markets to educate traders on mandatory facemask wearing, social and physical-distancing and all other directives by the president.”
The statement further called on all “commercial drivers to ensure all passengers wear facemasks before being allowed to board their vehicles” and also directed that “notices of ‘No Facemask, No Entry’ should be visibly displayed at vantage points including offices, lorry stations, shops, markets, malls, banks, pharmacies, among others.”
