W/R- COMMERCIAL USERS OF WATER TO PAY WATER BILLS DESPITE ANNOUNCED RELIEFS- GHANA WATER COMPANY
The Western Regional Public Relation Officer of Ghana Water Company, Nana Yaw Bannie, has reaffirmed government’s commitment to provide free access of water to the general public in the next three months excluding Commercial ,industrial and Private Community stand pipe producers in Sekondi Takoradi.
The direction comes in reference to President Nana Akufo-Addo’s fifth nation’s address on sunday, April 5, 2020 where he announced free water access to domestic users from April to June, as government intensifies effort to fight against COVID-19.
Relating government’s direction of free access of water to citizens in the next three months and how the policy will be implemented in the western region, Nana Yaw Bannie, said that, government’s direction only covers domestic customers. These are customers who do not use water for commercial purpose.
“There are different categories of water users including domestic, commercial, industrial and community stand pipe waters. Among these group it is only the domestic users and the beneficiaries of public community stand pipes who will be covered by the directive in the region”
He went on further to explain that, Ghana water company’s public stand pipes in the various communities will sell for free but private community stand pipes constructed by individuals will still sell water to the general public.
He also reiterated government’s plans not to cover citizens indebted to the company.
Answering questions about when the water rationing in the metropolis will come to an end, he added that ” during the dry season we do rationing but when the rains set in and there is enough volume of water we will stop. As I speak water levels in the Inchaban and Daboasi dams are very low, if we don’t do the rationing only few will get water .”
