Students Resort To Self-study As Teachers Embark On Strike Over COLA

Some students in the Senior High School within the Sekondi -Takoradi Metropolis have resolved to study by themselves as a result of the industrial action carried out by members of four teacher unions across the country.

Beach Newsroom’s visit to some schools witnessed that students were engaged in self-studies in the absence of their teachers as others were just loitering around.

At the Takoradi Senior Senior High School, students were in their classrooms and were being supervised by their tutors to ensure orderliness. In general, there was a quiet atmosphere as some teachers were seen in the staff common room whiling away time.

Beach Newsroom sought to engage school management on the strike action but there was no comment from them as their superiors have not instructed them to do so.

According to the teachers’ strike begins today as directed by leaders of the four teacher unions and that no teacher is to go to the classroom to teach.

Meanwhile, at the Takoradi Technical Institute (TTI), students were lazing around whilst the final year students were undertaking their practicals under the supervision of tutors and external invigilators.

Mr Nyann, an Administration Officer at the Institute said, “No teaching is ongoing but the final year students are having their practicals. The teachers are here to guide and supervise them but not to teach. We are on strike, and until it comes to an end we are not going back to the classroom.”

However, in an interaction with some students, they pleaded with teachers to come back to the class as the term lessons have still not been fully covered.

They said, the end-of-term exams are in a week, and do not know how long the strike action.

Some students expressed shock at the strike because they least expected it.

“We want our teachers to come back because there are a lot to cover, we can’t study without them “

“This strike has come as a surprise to us and we don’t know how long it would last, this is going to affect us.”

“Since the teachers are not teaching, we are learning on our own. When they come back teaching and learning would continue.”
