THE CONCEPT OF "OWNER MANAGER" IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE OF SMES NOT CAPITAL-AYRAM ATSU

Consulting Director of Credit at the Universal Metchant Ban, Eyram Atsu, has asserted that lack of proper managment is the biggest challenge faced by SMES in the country as compared to the popularist view of lack of Capital.

Explaining the Concept of “Owner Manager” in an interview with Beachfmonline Consulting Director Credit at Universal Merchant bank, Mr Eyram Atsu said that the concept of “Owner Management” where a business investor wants to manage his/her own business instead of either improving his/her Skills or outsourcing experience hands to handle affairs of the business is currently the major challenge affecting the growth of SMES in country.

“Management is the biggest setback for SMES ,there is this concept called “Owner Manager”, because somebody is the owner, he has invested into the business, he wants to manage it himself, it wouldn’t have been wrong if you have the technical capabitility but if you don’t you either improve on your own capability or engage the right people in the business, so people thinking is the working Capital that is the problem, it is not always the problem”

He also added that the survival of the businesses in Ghana is a double urged sword, that is though government is expected to create the right enabling environment by way of taxation, tax holidays, protect and help customers to access credit but when government creates the enabling environment, Customers must also take professional advantage of the opportunity by knowing the risk to take in all investments.

As part of efforts to build the Capacity of customers in the area of cash Cycle Management, Universal Merchant Bank(UMB) Takoradi organised a day’s Small Medium-Sized Enterprice(SMES) business Clinic for its customers.
