Retool Minerals Commission To Carry Out Investigation And Monitoring Works Effectively – Legal Practitioner To Government

A Legal practitioner, Theophilus Dzimega, says he is shocked about the recent explosion at the quarry site at Kobina AndohKrom in the Shama District, where five people are confirmed dead.

He says, no lessons were learned from the Appiatse, which also claimed many lives and injured several people.

He says the government is not retooling the Minerals Commission enough to carry out its investigative and monitoring work appropriately.

He says another incident could occur if nothing is done to address the recurrent explosions.

Mr. Dzimega called on the National Disaster and Management Organization, NADMO, to support the victims.

“After Appiate, there was a committee or a commission. They went to do their investigation, but we don’t know the outcome, nothing has been published. No report has been released for anybody to learn from and say that this is what we have learned from Appiate. So to sit here and say, have we learned any lessons? My short answer will be NO.

We haven’t learned any lessons because no lessons have been provided for us to learn from. But it has just been about a year and 8 months since Appiate happened and here we are, we have lost about 5 lives and still counting because someone obviously missing and cannot be accounted for and we will be fair to say that they are also gone,” He said.

” But suffice me to say, that the government is not doing its work well by retooling the Minerals Commission to carry out its investigative, appropriate monitoring work. Supervisory role. It’s very unfortunate that even today it appears that the story has just disappeared but we have lost 5 people, that’s a lot. So I that we have not learned any lessons.

At Appiate, I think we are likely to see explosive cars again without the needed convoy or escort. And after Appiate, have you gone to just focus on the transportation of explosives instead of looking at the storage and then manufacture? Are we going to wait until the time comes when we talk about how to ensure that storage is done properly, and transportation is done properly? But I won’t be surprised if this happens again.” He continued.
