The Western Regional Chairman of the GPRTU Isaac Essau, has told beachfmonline that his outfit in the Western region cannot go ahead to increase price of public fares by 10 percent on Monday, 16 September until official communication from the head office.
Speaking to Beachfmonline, Mr Isaac Essau said that a precise decision will be made on Saturday 13, September following the outcome of a nationwide meeting with the regional representatives and stakeholders in Accra.
‘‘Previously the practice is we get a copy of the press release from the national level but up till now we don’t have a copy so we cannot confirm if the change will take effect on Monday, there is going to be a meeting of all the regional representatives on Saturday to confirm the change, I am sure by Monday we will have access to the official press release so that we can define a clear wayfoward.
I am sure the problem of not receiving the official press release uptill date is stemming from the fact that staff of the GPRTU in Accra are currently on strike.
Ghana Private Road Transport Union(GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council release a press statement yesterday to communicate the increase in transport fairs.
The statement said the increase is “to accommodate predominantly an increase in fuel prices.”
This increase covers in tracity travel, intercity
travel and taxi cabs
The increases were brought on by the mid-year budget review and subsequent
Parliamentary approval which saw an upward adjustment in the Road Fund Levy
(RFL), the Energy Debt Recovery Levy (EDRL) and the Price Stabilization and
Recovery Levy (PSRL)
As a result, drivers and transport union members started agitating for an
increment in transport fares.
Transport fares were last increased by the GPRTU in April 2017 by 15 percent.
