Amakye Dede – I Was Forced to Crown Kuami Eugene
Ghanaian Highlife legend Amakye Dede has explained the circumstances which led him to crown Lynx Entertainment signed singer, Kuami Eugene as ‘Highlife King’ at the 2019 Ghana Music Awards sponsored by Vodafone.
Amakye Dede, during his short performance at the VGMA 2019, praised the young Highlife artiste who won the Highlife Artiste of the Year award on the night and went ahead to put a crown on his head as the highlife king.
The legendary Amakye Dede’s decision to crown Kuami Eugene surprised many in the auditorium and those watching live on Television.
Reacting to the criticisms, the manager of Amakye Dede, Akwesi Aboagye, has stated that the crowning moment was not part of their rehearsed act and his artiste did it against his will.
According to the manager, Amakye Dede was persuaded by some people to do the crowning but he declined the request.
“KiKi Banson, who was in charge of artiste repertoire for this year’s VGMAs, called to inform him that as part of Amakye Dede’s performance, they want him to crown Kuami Eugene and I told him I have to speak to my artiste about it.
“Amakye Dede was not in support of it when I informed him, so I was surprised to see him act against his will,”
The manager further narrated that after Amakye Dede declined the request, he was indirectly forced on stage when a crown was given him unexpectedly to be put on Kuami Eugene’s head.
“So those who watched that act will know that something was not right. According to Amakye Dede’s manager, he was surprised to see a lady walk on stage to hand over a crown to him,” he said.
