President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has announced that a state funeral will be held for the late former First Lady, Theresa Kufuor.

During a meeting with the family of the deceased former First Lady, President Akufo-Addo revealed that the state funeral is scheduled for November 16, 2023.

He emphasized that Theresa Kufour deserves to be accorded all the respect of a state funeral.

Theresa Kufuor, who passed away on Sunday, October 1, 2023, at the age of 87 after an extended period of illness, was the wife of John Agyekum Kufuor, Ghana’s second President of the Fourth Republic.

She served as Ghana’s First Lady during her husband’s presidency from 2001 to 2009.

Theresa Kufuor began her education at the Catholic Convent, OLA, in Keta, Volta Region, Ghana, and later pursued nursing and midwifery studies in London, Scotland, and Oxford.

She married John Kufuor in 1962 and is the mother of five and grandmother of eight.

Despite her role as Ghana’s First Lady, she maintained a relatively low political profile. She was known for her advocacy for educational reforms and her efforts in preventing mother-to-child transmission of diseases through the Mother and Child Community Development Foundation (MCCDF), a non-governmental organization operating in Ghana and Canada.
