Members of Parliament have called for swift disciplinary action against all the Police officers involved in the recent sporadic shooting incident in Tamale that led to the death of a Junior High School graduate and injury to four others.
The Minority Leader and MP for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu in whose constituency the incident happened in a statement on the floor of Parliament said, “Police brutalities are becoming too much in Tamale”.
Background
On Sunday, February 13, 2022 there was a clash between the Police and the youth of Lamashegu in Tamale. This resulted in the death of a recent JHS graduate named Abdul Hakeem Yakubu.
The violence started after the Police tried to arrest a 24 – year- old man, Raman Jabinu who sought refuge at the Lamashe Naa’s Palace.
Raman was said to be driving an unregistered vehicle when the Police stopped him but when he refused to stop, he was pursued by the Police and in the process he was shot.
The 24 year old man managed to drive to the Lamashegu Chief’s Palace, but the Police pursued him there. The Youth of the Area got angered for what they described as total disrespect to the traditional ruler leading to unrest.
Member of Parliament for the constituency, Haruna Iddrisu was not happy about the occurrence.
This, unfortunately, appears to be a growing trend, the third time in two years in the Tamale Metropolis. The police have no right to shoot and kill, except under extraordinary circumstances. I do not see the situation under these circumstances as extraordinary to warrant such reckless and irresponsible use of force,” he stated.
Other Members of Parliament expressed worry about the development and called for justice to be done.
