GTEC dismisses closure of teacher trainee colleges amid CETAG strike

GTEC

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has dismissed calls to close all Teacher Trainee Colleges in response to the ongoing strike by the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG).

CETAG began a nationwide strike on June 14, citing the government’s failure to implement agreed-upon arbitral awards and improve their conditions of service.

The strike, now approaching its second week, has disrupted academic activities, leaving most campuses deserted by students.

In an interview with Citi News, Professor Francis K. E. Nunoo, Deputy Director General of GTEC, emphasized that closing the colleges is not a viable option due to the severe financial implications it would entail.

He noted that significant progress has been made on many of CETAG’s demands and expressed hope for a resolution in the coming days to allow for a return to normalcy. Students are currently engaged in practical work, which requires supervision, so they are not entirely idle.

Professor Nunoo urged CETAG to consider ending the industrial action and stated that only if these efforts do not succeed will further actions be considered.
