Assembly Member Condemns Residents Use of Refuse as Sea Defense Wall in Funko
Presiding Member for the Ahanta West Municipality, Dominic Ntiful has rebutted claims by some residents of the Funko community that the government has remained adamant of their cry for a sea defense wall.
Residents of Funko a fishing community in the Ahanta West Municipality of the Western Region for sometime now have been using refuse to shield the coast from tidal waves. Heaps of solid waste have been hauled along the coast.
Responding to the justification by people to dump refuse along the coast, Mr. Ntiful, who doubles as the assembly member for the electoral area told Beachfmonline that works on the project are already ongoing for the construction of a sea defense wall from Adjowa community to Funko all in the Ahanta West Municipality.
He explains “some three year ago, government upon hearing the cries of the community awarded a contract for the construction of the sea defense wall. Currently Amandi Construction Limited is constructing a sea defense wall from Adowa to Funko”.
He said, government is committed at extending the project to New Amanful coastal lines.
And this new government has also awarded a contract to a new company who will also continue the stretch from Funko to New Amanfo.
“So l am taking aback with the communities resort to the use of solid waste as a sea defense and their calls on government to construct a sea defense wall for the community” he said.
He however admitted the project has stalled due to some protocols that needed to be observed.
He however appealed to residents of the community to remain calm as their plight will soon be alleviated.
“Because in the next three years none of us will be talking about his or her property being demolished by tidal waves for by then the defense wall would have been completed”.
