There is currently severe congestion at the wards and Out-Patients Department (OPD) of the nation’s second largest referral facility, Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi, the Ashanti Region capital.
This according to the hospital authorities is posing as a major drawback on efforts at improving quality health care in KATH.
Public Relations Officer of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Mr. Kwame Frimpong told BEACH NEWS in telephone interview that the facility has been admitting excessive referral cases for some time now.
KATH he said, is the only referral hospital serving large number of people from both the Ashanti region and the country at large.
Mr. Frimpong was reacting to reports that there was shortage of beds at the emergency unit of the hospital.
But he said, the current challenge facing the hospital is not shortage of beds as being speculated but rather lack of adequate space to admit fresh emergency cases.
“What people must note is that KATH has its own capacity and that we have exceeded our limit and now we are managing the situation. We cannot turn people away because we have hit our limit our responsibility is to deliver health care and that is what we are doing so people should just bear with us.”
Meanwhile, Mr. Kwame Frimpong was quick to call on the government to be up and doing and construct new referral facilities in the Region and other parts of the country to ease the pressure on KATH.
