Authorities at the Sunyani Technical University have called on the government to assist the institution in the payment of its debts to utility providers.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Kwadwo Adinkrah-Appiah, said the institution owed the Volta River Authority (VRA) and the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) millions of cedis, resulting in constant disruptions of electricity and water supply to the institution.
Prof Adinkrah-Appiah mentioned that the University has often been compelled to use part of its Internally-Generated Fund (IGF) to pay utility providers to ensure constant supply of power and water.
The University he said, has recently signed a memorandum of understanding with two universities in Germany and USA respectively that will focus on academic exchange programmes between Sunyani technical University and Maryland University, USA and Fochoschule Dortmund in Germany.
The Vice Chancellor who was speaking at the second matriculation ceremony of the University, which saw the admission of 2,226 students, comprising 1,320 males and 906 females representing a total of 1,229 of fresh students who opted for the Science and Technology programmes, whilst 997 of them will be pursuing Business and Humanities courses, urged the fresh students to endeavour to read and understand the rules and regulations of the University, as contained in the student’s handbook.
He also admonished them against alcoholism, drug abuse, stealing, occultism and sexual misconduct, reminding them that their continuous stay in the University would depend on their conduct and academic performance.
Prof Adinkrah-Appiah assured the fresh students of the University’s readiness and commitment to protect and support respectful, law-abiding, hardworking and disciplined students, but added that trouble-makers would not be tolerated.
He advised them to attend to their studies and make use of facilitates available to them to undertake research and that would help them to improve their knowledge.
