False gas leakage alarm at GHUMCO causes panic in Takoradi
There was a near chaotic situation yesterday Friday, December 8, at an LPG filling station close to the Ghana Utilities Manufacturing Company (GHUMCO) on the Sekondi-Takoradi main road, where a gas tanker was alleged to be leaking as it off-loads into a storage tank.
The incident which occurred at about 10:40am spontaneously brought motor traffic to a halt for more than 20 minutes causing people to run for their dear lives.
An eyewitness disclosed to Beach News that, “a gas tanker which had parked close to the LPG filling station was trying hard to shut one of its valves that was not properly closed.”
However, passer byers mistook the incident for something else due to the strong smell of LPG in the atmosphere, thereby raising the alarm of gas leakage.
As people took to their heels amidst shouts of “gas leakage”, the news spread like bush fire whiles others dreadfully run for their lives, especially with the memory of the recurrent gas explosion at GHUMCO yard in which almost two hundred people sustain various degrees of burns.
Assistant Division Officer, Emmanuel Bonney of the Ghana National Fire Service in the Western Region told beachfmonline that fire fighters were immediately dispatched to the scene when the news got to them but upon their arrival, the tanker had already left and there was no cause for alarm he added.
It will be recalled that on May 9, 2017, a gas tanker exploded at the Ghana Utilities Manufacturing Company (GHUMCO) and left over 150 individuals sustaining various degrees of injuries.
Most of the victims from that unfortunate incident are still counting their loss.
