The Paramount chiefs of Bekwai municipality in the Ashanti Region, Berima Offe Akwasi Okogyeasuo has accused government and politicians for being the sponsors behind galamsey operation in the country.
The paramount chief made the assertion to the Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs Minister, Kofi Dzamesi when he paid a courtesy call on Nananom in the Bekwai municipality on issues bothering galamsey activities and how chiefs can collaborate with government to clamp down illegal miners popularly know us galamsey in the country to save the environment and protect our natural resources for the future generation.
Addressing the minister and his entourage, Kokofumanhene, Barimah Offeh Akwasi Okogyeasuo, fingered government officials at the minerals commission for issuing licences to miners without informing owners of the land “Nananom” and Nananom all over this country has no right what so ever to supervise any miner who is destroying the environment.
According to him, this has contributed to the indiscriminate destruction we see all around us from illegal mining activities.
Barimah Offeh Akwasi Okogyeasuo advised the minister not to allow any government official to chair any committee concerning illegal mining but rather include traditional authorities in the formation of such committees to ensure a total collapse of the illegal mining activities in the country.
Hon. Kofi Dzamesi on the other hand mentioned that upon their investigations he can testify that galamseyer’s do not operate in the night but in a broad day light.
That is why government he said is yet rolling out strict measures to eradicate the galamsey menace to the bad.
