Ankaful staff commence strike action, scores of patients left stranded
Staff of the Ankaful Psychiatric Hospital have commenced their sit-down strike to protest the continuous presence of the hospital’s Director, Dr. Eugene Dordoye.
Dr. Dordoye has overtime been accused by the aggrieved staff of maltreatment as well as mismanagement of the hospital.
The strike follows several attempts by staff of the facility to get the Health Ministry and the Mental Health Authority dismiss Dr. Dordoye.
In an interview with Beach FM’s partner station, Citi FM in Accra, the Public Relations Officer of the Psychiatric Nurse’s Group, Mr. Benjamin Awotwe disclosed that the strike has become the only remaining avenue left to them, following the failure of authorities to heed their pleas.
Wards are under lock and key with strips of red cloth tied to doorways, leaving patients and visitors stranded and hoping for a change in the situation.
Meanwhile, management of the hospital has issued a statement to deny reports claiming it gave a directive for a mass discharge of the hospital’s patients.
Though they admitted there was a meeting with the aggrieved nurses, the statement said the meeting was held only “to remind them of their duties and responsibilities as nurse managers”.
