Ghanaians supporters played a key role in the failure of the Black Stars to qualify for the 2018 Fifa World cup, according to former Ghana International Abdul Karim Zito.
Ghana failed to qualify for a fourth straight world cup finishing third in group E behind Uganda and group winners Egypt. The Black Stars rounded off the qualifiers with a 1-1 drawn against Egypt at the Cape Coats stadium on Sunday,failing to win a home game throughout the qualifiers.
The team and its technical handlers have come in for harsh criticism in several quarters for their abysmal performance in the qualifiers, with coach Kwesi Appiah’s tactical abilities called into question.
Abdul Karim Zito who guided division outfit Dreams FC back into the topflight has however questioned Ghanaians displeasure at the Black Stars inability to qualify for the World Cup in Russia. According to Zito Ghanaians did not offer enough support to the team and indeed jubilated some defeats of team during the qualifiers.
“There was a time during the [qualifying] campaign that Ghanaians prayed for the team to lose. There was a time when people jubilated because Ghana had lost.”
“Have they forgotten?” he asked.
He added that “the supporters didn’t want the team to qualify. Why are we crying now? Ghana is a God fearing country and we must be careful of the things we say. This is the result of what we planted”
Karim Zito called on Ghanaians to support coach Kwesi Appiah as he seeks to rebuild the team for Afcon 2019 and the 2022 world cup qualifiers.
