World Teacher’s Day Marked With A Call On The Government To Pay Attention To Welfare of Teachers

Today is World Teachers Day, where the immense contributions of teachers are appreciated, globally.

Marking this important day in Takoradi, in the Western Region, the President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers, GNAT, Rev. Isaac Owusu has appealed to the government to give attention to the welfare of teachers.

The day is celebrated on the theme: The Teachers We Need for the Education We Want: The Global imperative to reverse the teacher shortage.

Mr Owusu opined that the Ghana Teachers Prize was to motivate teachers to higher performance and the respect the teaching profession should enjoy.

According to him, it is absolutely important that teachers are well motivated to teach effectively and efficiently thus, the establishment of the National Best Teachers Award Scheme in October 1994 by the Ministry of Education then under the leadership of the late Mr Harry Romalus Sawyerr to recognise and reward the country’s hardworking teachers.

He, however, reminded that payment of the 20 per cent gross salary for teachers who accept postings to underserved areas should be prioritised, refund of deducted GH¢ 44.55 in respect of the laptops be expedited as well as the supply of the remaining ones done, and others.

Some of the teachers who spoke to Beach News said, that tutors need to be appreciated more.

“I doubt teachers are appreciated enough, but putting together this award scheme is a good start.”

“As teachers, we are grateful for the administrators category. At least we also get recognised,”
