The President, Nana Akufo-Addo, has officially launched the Free Senior High School programme.
The event took place at the West African Senior High School in Accra.
According to the President, the policy will see a significant drop from more than 100,000 to 3600 in the number of students who are unable to further their education after completing Junior High School.
More than 420,000 students are bound to benefit from the programme.
The policy will see the government catering for tuition, admission, library, science centre, computer lab, examination, and utility fees.
Addressing the gathering at the event, President Akufo-Addo said, “the policy is not about the NPP or the NDC…this is about Ghana and how to build a progressive and prosperous nation.”
The President also urged beneficiaries of the Free SHS policy to utilize the opportunity because Ghana needs their skills and talents.
The president also urged them not to fail the nation.
Meanwhile, the opposition New Democratic Congress, the Minority in Parliament has castigated the government for allegedly lying to Ghanaians about its Free SHS policy.
At a press conference held on Monday, the Minority Leader, Haruna Idrisu who addressed the press bemoaned the exclusion of ‘continuing’ students.
According to Mr. Idrisu, government’s “inability to roll out the Free SHS to cover those in second and third years, the NPP has only successfully vindicated those who said Akufo-Addo’s Free SHS promise is a hoax.”
