Taxis used as Ambulance during Emergencies at Kwesimintsim Hospital

The Administrator for the Kwesimintsim Hospital, Mr. Felix Osei-Kesse, has confirmed reports about the lack of an Ambulance at the hospital.
In an interview with Agyekum Gyimah Akwasi, host of the Sunset Beach on Beach 105.5 FM in Takoradi, Mr. Osei-Kesse disclosed that taxis are the mode of transport during emergencies.
When asked how long the situation has been in existence, Mr. Osei-Kesse said, although he has been in his position as the hospital’s Administrator for five months, records he has, ‘’doesn’t indicate that we have ever had one before.”
“In terms of duration, it’s been very long”, he added. Concerning other challenges facing the hospital, Mr. Osei-Kesse also confirmed reports about the hospital’s lack of a functioning standby generator for about a year, but stated that, the issue has been resolved through the assistance of the Regional Health Directorate.
According to the Administrator of the Kwesimintsim Hospital, ideally, the hospital should have three Pharmacists for each shift, but currently the hospital has only one.
He further revealed that it is not a situation peculiar to the Kwesimintsim Hospital alone. “Across the country most district hospitals only have one pharmacist”, he stated.
Pointing out other challenges facing the hospital, the Administrator for the Kwesimintsim Hospital stated that issues such as inadequate space to enable room for the setting up of more beds “are capital projects which cannot be financed by the hospital.”
In a bid to deal with the situation, Mr. Osei-Kesse stated that, officials of the hospital are lobbying through various stakeholders, to get assistance from the government to address the hospital’s infrastructural problems, when there are plans for expansion projects.
Mr. Osei-Kesse also stated that, challenges that can be handled internally by the management of the hospital are thoroughly addressed, however, there are some that are beyond the hospital’s ability, and with those, government assistance is needed.
