Onion Traders at the New Market in Takoradi say their business is on the verge of collapse following the closure of the Benin border.
The development they say is a result of the military takeover in Niger.
According to them, it is hurting their businesses.
They say trucks carrying onions from Niger have been stranded for days at the Border.
In an interview with Beach News, the traders appeal to the government to intervene as any further hold-up is likely to affect the prices of onions on the market.
Kwasi Amoako, an onion trader said, “Our business is about to collapse. There are no supplies coming in and my buyers too are stranded, they keep calling me but I have informed them that, due to the Niger conflicts, trucks are not coming as they used to.
The trucks are stuck on the Benin border, we want the President to intervene, if not that we will be out of business.”
Meanwhile, a Security Analyst, Dr. Sadique Adutwum says Ghana needs to use diplomatic means to negotiate for more onions from the Niger to augment the shortage in the country.
He said a continuation of the tussle between ECOWAS and the military junta of Niger if not checked and resolved through dialogue will continue to lead to food insecurity within the Sub-regions.
