Conflicts Over The Installation Of Prepaid Meters Recur in Lower Manya Krobo

A few days after power was restored to the troublesome Krobo area, several people of Nuaso in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality in the Eastern Region are accusing the military of cruelty.

People claim that when a crew from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and military officers raided homes in the Nuaso neighborhood to install prepaid meters, residents who objected were beaten and suffered significant wounds.

Unconfirmed accounts also claim that some people tried to pour hot oil on ECG and military officers, though it is unclear what precipitated the actions.

Others threatened to stab them with a cutlass if they installed the new meters.

When they arrived, I was cooking in the kitchen, a person who accused the military stated. They instructed me to go to my room, but I refused because I was in the kitchen preparing dinner.

They grabbed their cane and began beating me as soon as I stated I couldn’t go, she claimed.

She continued by saying that if they came back, the soldiers would use more force.

“They said we were coming back and beating you worse than this,” the woman said.

The management of the Electricity Company of Ghana has stated that work is proceeding without any problems in some areas of the Nuaso area, and they have started their own inquiries to find out what exactly happened and what was alleged.
