Minority criticizes Korle-Bu for raising the cost of dialysis treatment

The Minority Caucus in Parliament has strongly criticized the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital for its decision to increase the cost of renal dialysis from GHS¢380 to GHS¢765.42.

They have labeled this move as both “illegal and outrageous.”

Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the spokesperson for the Minority Caucus on health matters, expressed his concern, pointing out that the hospital does not have the authority to unilaterally set its fees and charges without parliamentary approval.

He emphasized that such fees should go through the appropriate parliamentary channels, and he himself, as a member of the Subsidiary Legislation Committee, had no knowledge of any such exorbitant fee being approved for dialysis.

Akandoh also emphasized that public health institutions like Korle-Bu should prioritize providing quality healthcare to the people rather than focusing on profit-making.

He argued that the primary objective of public health facilities should be to deliver quality healthcare services, not to generate profits.

The Minority Caucus warned that if the hospital does not reverse this drastic fee increase by Monday, October 2, they will visit the facility to investigate the situation firsthand.

They also mentioned the possibility of summoning the Minister of Health to appear before the Subsidiary Legislation Committee to answer questions if the issue persists.
