Gabon coup: Concern over military leaders’ intentions in ruling the state

military

The military in Gabon has been accused by the opposition coalition of giving no indication that, after toppling the previous administration of Ali Bongo, they intend to restore civilian rule.

It would be absurd for the putschists to swear in a president on Monday before dissolving the institutions they had themselves established, a coalition spokeswoman, Alexandra Pangha, told the media.

She criticized them for being unwilling to hold discussions with the party she claimed had won last Saturday’s presidential election.

“Up to today we have been waiting for an invitation from the military so that they can talk to us and tell us exactly what’s the plan,” Ms. Pangha said, adding that she did not believe the Bongo dynasty had ceded power.

She alleged that the other family members were supporting the coup leader, General Brice Oligui Nguema, without offering any supporting evidence.
