Alex Ferguson played a role in Welbeck rejecting Black Stars call up

Danny Welbeck

Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson played a crucial role in Danny Welbeck turning down an opportunity to play for Ghana and representing England instead, according to veteran sports journalist Dan Kwaku Yeboah.

Welbeck, who was born in Manchester to Ghanaian parents, had positive discussions with the Ghana Football Association and was convinced by Asamoah Gyan to play for the Black Stars.

However, he ultimately made his England debut against Ghana in a friendly at Wembley in 2011, much to the disappointment of Ghanaian fans who booed him.

Kwaku Yeboah stated, “Asamoah Gyan singlehandedly convinced Danny Welbeck to come and play for Ghana. Danny Welbeck agreed to play for Ghana. Asamoah said a day before the boy decided officially, Sir Alex Ferguson heard about it and threatened him not to play for Ghana because that would be the end of his Manchester United career.”

Despite not playing for Ghana, Welbeck remains a fan of the Black Stars and celebrated his club teammate Tariq Lamptey’s decision to choose Ghana over England.
