The Office of the Special Prosecutor has initiated an inquiry into the government’s payroll system, as disclosed in its half-year report released on December 29, 2023.

The focus of the assessment and investigation is to eliminate fictitious entries, recover improper payments, and potentially prosecute individuals suspected of wrongdoing.

The Special Prosecutor’s Office emphasized its collaboration with the Controller and Accountant General’s Department, forming a joint project team for the investigation.

The investigation, spanning all banks and government payroll employees, is being conducted in two phases. Phase I encompasses the Ghana Education Service and health institutions, while Phase II involves Metropolitan/Municipal/District Assemblies, Ministries, Departments, and Agencies.

The Special Prosecutor’s Office is also examining 152 other cases at various stages, with a commitment to publicize them if they align with the Office’s mandate and move past the preliminary investigation stage.

This policy is designed to safeguard the privacy of individuals, protect business operations, and prevent unwarranted stigmatization.
