According to Rocklin local police, a man from California who was killed after being hit by a car was seen assisting a family of ducks to cross the road just before the accident.

In Rocklin, about 25 miles (40 km) northeast of Sacramento, police reported that Casey Rivara, 41, got out of his car before being hit by a teenage driver.

Witnesses claimed Mr. Rivara made sure the ducks were waddling to safety before the collision.

There haven’t been any arrests.

“The man was reportedly trying to help some ducklings that were in the intersection,” the Rocklin Police Department said in a statement.

“As the man was in the intersection, a teenage driver was headed eastbound on Stanford Ranch Boulevard. This juvenile driver struck the pedestrian who was in the roadway.”

One witness, Summer Peterson, told a local news reporter that her children witnessed the collision, which happened on Thursday night around 20:15 local time.
“They were saying, ‘Oh, it’s so cute. It’s so nice of him.’ And then all of a sudden he was hit by a car,” she said.

People have left floral tributes and rubber ducks at the scene of the accident.

According to an online fundraising campaign set up by the victim’s family member, Mr. Rivara was taking his kids home from swim practice when they spotted a “mama duck and ducklings struggling to cross a busy intersection.”
“Casey was the kindest, most amazing husband and father,” the fundraiser reads. “Even his last act in this world was a sign of his compassion.”

In a statement, his widow, Angel Chow, said: “We want to express our heartfelt gratitude to all of you for the kind messages and deeds of kindness.

The incident is still being investigated, according to the Rocklin Police Department, and no one has been arrested.

According to Rocklin Police Captain Scott Horrillo, it is unlikely that the teenage driver will be charged with a crime.
