Protect And Promote the Rights of Agricultural Workers – GAWU To Government

General Secretary of the General Agricultural Workers Union, GAWU, Edward Kareweh has called on the government to protect and promote the rights of agricultural workers in the country against any form of slavery.

The sector, he said is characterized by a significant decent work deficit which includes the prevalence of formality and weekly bi-market institutions and fair farm contract practices.

He said for a bright future free from all forms of oppression and discrimination, it would start by putting workable, efficient, and effective systems and structures in place to support the agricultural sector.

According to the General Secretary, to attain sustainable development and equitable growth, it is undeniable that agriculture plays a critical role in providing employment and sustaining the Ghanaian economy.

He added that with the potential of the sector to contribute to the development of the economy many challenges leave most of its agents trapped in abject poverty.

Mr Kawereh said, the sector, is characterized by a significant decent work deficit which includes the prevalence of formality and weekly bi-market institutions and fair farm contract practices.
