The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in the United States have launched concurrent investigations into the activities of former Sanitation Minister, Cecilia Abena Dapaah, and her associates.
The OSP shared the news on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter), stating that these investigations primarily focus on examining their assets and financial transactions within the United States.
The collaborative effort aims to determine the legality of Ms. Dapaah and her associates’ wealth, both concerning their funds moving between Ghana and the United States.
Cecilia Dapaah gained attention in July when two of her house helps were brought before an Accra Circuit Court on charges of stealing money and items worth millions of Ghana Cedis. Following intense public pressure, she resigned from her position on July 22, 2023.
Additionally, the former Sanitation Minister has filed an interlocutory injunction application against the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) in an effort to halt the Office’s investigation and prosecution of her and her husband, Daniel Osei Kufuor, for suspected corruption and related offenses.
Court documents indicate that she is also seeking a court order to unfreeze her bank accounts and declare the reseizure of funds at her Abelemkpe residence and the refreezing of her bank accounts as unjust.
Furthermore, Madam Dapaah’s legal team is requesting an order to prohibit the OSP from continuing the investigation of the applicant and her husband for corruption or related offenses.
Court documents filed by the OSP in September had revealed that Ms. Dapaah used aliases to obscure transactions related to undeclared real estate business and other transactions, which prompted the reseizure and refreezing of her bank account. However, she has disputed these claims, describing them as misleading.
